Brilliant Gomez and Morticia Addams Costumes
I have ALWAYS loved The Addams Family movie, Such a cult classic, so we were excited about our costumes this year as Morticia and Gomez Addams. Everything but Morticia’s black wig we already had, or found easily at a second hand store.
Gomez is sporting a parted and slicked back hairdo, a bit of white face powder with a bit of grey shadow around the eyes, darkened eyebrows, and a natural mustache darkened with a little makeup. We found his red shirt, old-school style neckerchief and vest at a second hand store, but had everything else. A grey dress shirt that we already had would have worked fine, but we felt like the red shirt Gomez wears in his sword fight scene with Tully was more iconic so we searched for a red one and found this one easily. We wanted to add a fake hand on Gomez’s shoulder as “thing” in the movie but couldn’t find one in time so maybe next time.
Morticia was a bit more work in the getting ready department. Luckily it’s easy to come up with a long black dress, and I already had two that would work, so that made things simple. All I needed to buy was a wig and I found that easily online inexpensively. What this costume mostly needed was some effort. The makeup required about an hour and change. Lots of white powder, stark dark grey smokey-eyes with winged out black gel eyeliner, big thick fake lashes, fire engine red lipstick, and a steady hand to make it all perfection. Morticia sports signature red nails and big black rings so of coarse I added those touches.
I had meant to grab my budless rose stems from the classic scene where Morticia cuts all the rose buds off her rose bush for my picture but I forgot. Darn! Maybe next time.__ Last I threw on my long black dress and pinned the wig on. My hair is already long and thick so it took some work to get it all stuffed into the wig cap and pinned, but it was a great wig for being so cheap and looked as natural as a super long, jet black wig could look when all was said and done.
We received a TON of compliments and people pointing at us all night. It was so fun. We had a great time putting these costumes together. Happy Haunting!
